New York, NY, United States (AHN) – The foreclosure mortgage mess might cost banks billions of dollars. Concern over the cost has caused nervous investors to unload bank stock, sending the prices of those stocks in a downward spiral.

In addition, attorneys general in all 50 states earlier this week said they planned to investigate irregularities and potential illegalities in paperwork for foreclosures.

Some mortgage foreclosure paperwork was handled by so-called robo-signers, employees who signed hundreds of foreclosure papers without personally inspecting the paperwork to make sure it was accurate.

Wednesday’s announcement by the attorneys general has apparently had an effect on the cost to insure corporate bonds.

The Counterparty Risk Index, compiled by Credit Derivatives Research, rose on Thursday. The index measures the cost to insure bonds issued by 14 banks for five years. On Thursday, the index rose to 127 basis points, which means it would cost $127,000 annually to insure $10 million of bank-issued corporate bonds. A week ago, the insurance would have cost $120,300.

Bank of America last week announced a moratorium on foreclosures until it could review paperwork to ensure accuracy.

However, not all banks followed suit.

Some judges across the country have expressed alarm over the flagrant disregard for the integrity of papers filed in court.
