But then along came the Tesla, and thanks to Lotus, it looks much cooler than a Prius.  Although the styling may not prove worthy of wall space, the Tesla has proven to be extremely fast, and efficient.  A restricted Top-Speed of 120 MPH, 0-60 in 3.7 seconds, and 244 miles of travel on a single charge….  not too shabby.  Tesla is also releasing an SUV, and several other models are currently available, with more styles and updates planned for 2013.

But a new Tesla costs around $100,000, and judging by the amount of high-profile lawsuits their engaged with (Tesla is suing BBC TopGear, Fisker, etc.), I’d bet a portion of that goes towards the salaries of their bloated staff of attorneys, and I wouldn’t be surprised if DeLorean became their next potential target (and the writer of this blog, various 12th grade science classes, the entire government, etc etc etc).   To put pricing into perspective, a Tesla costs almost twice the price of a 27 MPG (hwy) Lotus Elise!  Not a cash buyer?  How about a monthly payment of $2,258.00 for the Tesla vs. $1,240.00 per month for the Lotus (no money down, purchase price of $100k for Tesla & $55k for Lotus, based on a 48 month loan at 4% interest,).  I’ll take the Lotus and stash the $45k under my mattress for gas.

So let’s talk about Fisker.   The Fisker Karma is an incredibly sexy car with beautiful lines and an exquisite interior, easily passing the pin-up test.  The Fisker sort of looks like a beefed up version of the Maserati GranTurismo, yet with a bit more of an angular design.  The design was created by its owner, Henrik Fiskar, who has an impressive resume of beautiful car designs under his belt, including the BMW Z8, Aston Martin DB9, and Aston Martin Vantage.  Fisker also unveiled the Fisker Surf and Fisker Nina, the latter poised to be more eco-friendly and affordable.  All cars are stunningly designed and fall into the  “four-door luxury sports sedan plug-in hybrid” category.  Try saying that 10 times fast.

As far as performance goes, the Karma hits a top-speed of 125 MPH, and does 0-60 in a bit under 5.8 seconds.  With a full tank of petrol and fully charged battery, the Fisker can travel 230 miles.

But it has its disadvantages.  The Fisker is a HEAVY car, coming in around 5,300 pounds, which equates to about 20 MPG when running without a battery and on petrol alone.  Although Iwasn’t shocked at the $95,000 sticker price,  its limited production makes getting your hands on one extremely difficult.  If you’re considering cashing in on your kids college funds to own one, be prepared  to work a bit of overtime as potential dealer premiums are likely to be around $10,000 to infinity which can catapult the price far North of its $95,000 sticker.   But that’s not all.  Delays, delays, delays.  The Nina is now delayed at least until 2013, the Karma seemed to get delayed by a year each year of its anticipated debut, and one would be a fool to try and accurately predict when we’ll see the Surf in person.

And SCANDALS run amok!  Tesla’s suing Fisker over their electric car design, Mitt Romney’s investigating the government loan applied to the Nina, and the Obama Administration is being looked into for allegedly providing Fisker, a Finland based company, with $530 million dollars in loan guarantees provided by guess who?  The U.S. taxpayers.

And now DeLorean.  It appears that DeLorean isn’t only breaking ground with its electric car, but also within its marketing department.  As the release date approaches for the DeLorean DMCev Flux (and then gets delayed, and delayed again), we just may end up becoming very familiar with DeLorean’s new branding message.  That famous quote by Doc to Michael J. Fox in “Back to the Future” is now also a thing of the past as “roads” gets replaced with “gas”  as in, DeLorean:  “Gas?  Where we’re going we don’t need gas!”  For those still reading, I’ll spare any more “Back to the Future” cliche’s.

There’s not a lot of information out yet about the electric DeLorean besides its release date which is set for 2013, its sticker price which is set to be around $100,000, and its top-speed, which is around 120 MPH.  You can count on scandals and law-suits, and government money being thrown around like chips at a busy craps table in Vegas.

Whether you’re a petrol-head, purist, techy, or volunteer at Greenpeace, we all have to agree on one thing; Progress.  We’ve come a long way since the Prius, and the environmentally conscious automobile enthusiasts (with deep pockets) now have a few choices.  Once we get past the political BS and lawsuits, good ole fashion democracy will emerge in the form of… competition!  Bigger, better, faster and environmentally friendly can take shape in many forms, and we the people, being the consumer’s, will ultimately dictate the direction of the future.

It earned $2.5 billion compared to the $1.3 billion GM earned a year earlier.

The nation’s No. 1 automaker had revenue of $39.4 billion, up by 19 percent on improved average pricing and numbers of vehicles sold.

Only two years out of a federal bailout, most of GM’s growth came from U.S. sales, which increased by 11 percent to 669,000 vehicles sold while company-wide growth increased by 7 percent overall to 2.3 million vehicles sold worldwide.

For the first time in years, GM made money in each of its four regions.

GM (GM, Fortune 500) posted a profit of $2.5 billion, or $1.54 per share, compared with $1.3 billion, or 85 cents per share a year earlier.
