Press Release –

Chattanooga, TN, United States (AHN PR) – Prof. Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Management of Volkswagen Aktiengesellschaft, and the U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray La Hood have today inaugurated the new Volkswagen Group plant in the United States in the presence of prominent representatives from politics, business and the media. At Chattanooga, Tennessee, over 2,000 employees are to produce up to 150,000 vehicles per year. The plant sets new standards in terms of sustainable, resource-efficient production.

At the inauguration ceremony, which was also attended by Dr. Klaus Scharioth, German Ambassador to the United States, Bill Haslam, Governor of the U.S. State of Tennessee, Jonathan Browning, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, as well as U.S. senators Robert Corker and Lamar Alexander, Prof. Winterkorn stated: “The Volkswagen Group has finally arrived as a local manufacturer in the United States. We are proud to be part of this great automobile nation as a producer, an employer and as a friend and good neighbor to people in the region.”

Since construction started in 2009, an automobile plant including body shop, paint shop, assembly facility, technical testing center, academy for the initial and advanced training of employees, and a supplier park with eight companies has been built on a 5.6 km² site in Chattanooga. The design production capacity of the plant is 150,000 vehicles per year. The manufacturing depth for the Passat produced here will be of the order of 85 percent. 1,700 people are already employed directly by Volkswagen in Chattanooga. 10,000 additional jobs will be created in the U.S. component supply industry.

Volkswagen is investing about one billion US dollars in the development of the facility at Chattanooga, which will be among the world’s most advanced and environmentally compatible automobile plants. The new plant is in line with the highest requirements of the U.S. LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standard, which lays down stringent provisions for the sustainable, environmentally compatible construction of buildings. One of the key measures taken at the plant is the use of a painting process without any filler, which reduces CO2 emissions by about 20 percent.

Water efficiency at the plant also meets the most stringent requirements. Volkswagen has built the world’s first automobile paint shop to use a waterless separation process for topcoat application. Thanks to the use of collected rainwater, water consumption at the Chattanooga plant is also considerably lower than at facilities of a comparable size. In addition, the U.S. plant is the first Volkswagen facility to rely entirely on energy-saving LED systems for outdoor lighting. The production buildings and offices are also equipped only with energy-saving lamps controlled by motion sensors. The entire lighting system of the plant uses some 20 percent less energy than a comparable facility.

The United States is one of the world’s largest and most important automobile markets. The new U.S. plant lays the foundations for Volkswagen to meet its target of boosting Group sales in the United States to more than a million vehicles per year by 2018 at the same time as winning a market share of about six percent for the Volkswagen Group. The U.S. Passat from Chattanooga, specially tailored to meet the needs of American customers, and the Jetta produced in Mexico are key elements in Volkswagen’s offensive in North America. The next generation of the iconic Beetle will pick up the threads of the brand’s legendary heritage in the U.S.

Who doesn’t want a junk and clutter free house. The problem is where to dump all the stuff. Usually it is just thrown away or dumped somewhere but everything that is not of use anymore, it just doesn’t seem appropriate to throw it away. So, we give it out to the needy people who can make use of it one way or the other. Another option that most of the people tend to neglect is recycling.
Recycling means to make use of old and used items by re-using them as they are or after re-processing them. A very eligible recycling product is a used, out dated car which won’t work anymore and neither sells. Many of us have such types of vehicles lying in our garages, taking up unnecessary space. So why not give it up for recycling.
Now a days it is not a difficult task to sell of your car to someone who can make use of your otherwise unworthy car. A lot of junk yards would readily want to sign up a contract for useless car. To help locate a possible new home for your vehicle you could look up the internet for such places around the neighborhood or just flip through your yellow pages for contact information.
Make sure you have several names in your list as each yard would be offering deals that might vary drastically, and you wouldn’t want to miss the best offer. It is always wise to ask around and take quotes from a number of dealers for your car because there is always a possibility of being tricked but also make sure that when striking a deal you do not expect a wad of cash to land in your pocket as used and worn out parts, but still workable sell at very low price as compared to a new or second hand one.
Once, you get all the details and you have a person interested in your car, you would want to take care of two things on first-basis. Firstly, you have the title of your car available with you. If you do not have it, then order one as soon as possible because the yard owner will never want to buy a car that is stolen and has its owner looking for it. It doesn’t mean that you are being doubted, but it is only legal to hand over the title to the new owner upon selling. Secondly, before handing over the vehicle, make sure that you have had a through look inside your car for any personal things that might be lying inside and were forgotten. Always remember, once sold, the junk yard would not in any way allow you to search your car for any leftover personal belongings.
On the day of handing over your car, you might want to make a last try at negotiating. It is usually expected, but if you are happy with the contract and sure that you are getting a fair price, you sign and leave. The people at the junk yard would open up your car and sell any parts that are useable while the rest of your teared down car will be scrap metal ready for recycling while you will have dealt with the junk in your yard that too with some extra cash in your hand.

Baltimore, MD, United States (AHN) – The General Motors electric motor plant being constructed near Baltimore will be doubly innovative in its use and conservation of energy.

The facility will be the first by a major U.S. automaker dedicated to making the critical components for vehicle electrification when the plant opens in 2013. Additionally, the state of the art facility will be partially powered by the sun.

On Tuesday, GM broke ground on the nearly $300 million plant. Electric motor design and production has become a core business for GM with the development and manufacture of plug-in electric and hybrid vehicles.

“We believe the future of sustainable transportation is electrically driven vehicles and this facility will help us maintain a leadership position within this category,” Mike Robinson, GM vice president for energy, environment and safety policy, said in a statement. “It’s fitting that green ‘motors of the future’ are being built at a facility well recognized for ongoing efforts to reduce its environmental impact.”

The campus will be powered in part by a 1.23-megawatt rooftop solar array and is expected to generate 9 percent of its annual energy consumption, saving approximately $330,000 during the life of the project.

“By harnessing solar energy from this array, GM will offset up to 1,103 metric tons of carbon dioxide from entering the air per year – equivalent to the emissions from 216 passenger vehicles,” said Robinson.

GM’s Baltimore operation also generates no landfill waste. It earned zero-landfill status in 2007 by recycling, reusing or converting to energy all waste from daily operations.

Linda Young – AHN News Writer

New York, NY, United States (AHN) – Soaring commodity prices are wreaking havoc on consumer’s budgets here in the U.S., but experts say not to expect them to go down because the culprit is increased global demand for food and fuel.

Increased demand from population growth in developing nations is not only causing prices to increase but it is also causing a scarcity of resources, according to Jeremy Grantham, who helped found Boston-based GMO asset management firm.

Grantham says that population growth and the rise of India, China and Brazil have caused a shift in balance in the world that has resulted in increasing prices for food, energy and metals.

Those factors are contributing to soaring global prices for those commodities. Although some people have blamed speculation in commodity markets or the fiscal policies of some governments or central banks, population growth is also a driving force in pushing prices upward. That means that if even commodity markets crash, prices will not stay far down for long, Grantham says.

Grantham notes that in the past century commodity prices declined by 70 percent because of economies that were achieved in using materials more efficiently or substituting materials. However, he said that trend is reversing as we reached the end of being able to achieve efficiencies at a time when the world population was growing.

In addition to global population growth, people in developing nations are earning more and consuming more as a result.

In his April 2011 newsletter, Grantham warned that it was “time to wake up” because “the days of abundant resources and falling prices are over forever.”

“The world is using up its natural resources at an alarming rate, and this has caused a permanent shift in their value,” Grantham wrote. “We all need to adjust our behavior to this new environment. It would help if we did it quickly.”

Grantham summarized the problem:

Until about 1800, our species had no safety margin and lived, like other animals, up to the limit of the food supply, ebbing and flowing in population.

From about 1800 on the use of hydrocarbons allowed for an explosion in energy use, in food supply, and, through the creation of surpluses, a dramatic increase in wealth and scientific c progress.

Since 1800, the population has surged from 800 million to 7 billion, on its way to an estimated 8 billion, at minimum.

The rise in population, the ten-fold increase in wealth in developed countries, and the current explosive growth in developing countries have eaten rapidly into our finite resources of hydrocarbons and metals, fertilizer, available land and water.

Now, despite a massive increase in fertilizer use, the growth in crop yields per acre has declined from 3.5% in the 1960s to 1.2% today. There is little productive new land to bring on and, as people get richer, they eat more grain-intensive meat. Because the population continues to grow at over 1%, there is little safety margin.

The problems of compounding growth in the face of finite resources are not easily understood by optimistic, short-term-oriented, and relatively innumerate humans (especially the political variety).

The fact is that no compound growth is sustainable. If we maintain our desperate focus on growth, we will run out of everything and crash. We must substitute qualitative growth for quantitative growth.

But Mrs. Market is helping, and right now she is sending us the Mother of all price signals. The prices of all important commodities except oil declined for 100 years until 2002, by an average of 70%. From 2002 until now, this entire decline was erased by a bigger price surge than occurred during World War II.

Statistically, most commodities are now so far away from their former downward trend that it makes it very probable that the old trend has changed – that there is in fact a Paradigm Shift – perhaps the most important economic event since the Industrial Revolution.

Climate change is associated with weather instability, but the last year was exceptionally bad. Near term it will surely get less bad.

Excellent long-term investment opportunities in resources and resource efficiency are compromised by the high chance of an improvement in weather next year and by the possibility that China may stumble.

From now on, price pressure and shortages of resources will be a permanent feature of our lives. This will increasingly slow down the growth rate of the developed and developing world and put a severe burden on poor countries.

We all need to develop serious resource plans, particularly energy policies. There is little time to waste.

Kris Alingod – AHN News Contributor

Buffalo, NY, United States (AHN) – Buffalo became the second city in the nation on Tuesday to ban a method of natural gas drilling called fracking. The federal government the same day began its probe of how the drilling method affects drinking water.

The Buffalo city council voted unanimously to approve a proposal prohibiting hydraulic fracturing in the city, which is located on the Marcellus Shale, a massive land formation rich in natural gas reserves.

“Meaningful regulatory limitation and prohibitions concerning Marcellus Shale natural gas extraction, along with zoning and land use provisions, are barred because they conflict with certain legal powers claimed by resource extraction corporations,” the new ordinance states.

Fracking is a way of extracting natural gas by injecting chemicals underground at high pressure to fracture formations of shale and other rocks, thereby releasing trapped natural gas.

The process has been linked to contaminated tap water, watersheds, and surrounding air.

The ordinance passed in Buffalo also bans the disposal, storage or treatment of wastewater or other wastes produced in drilling. It comes after New York approved a state-wide moratorium on fracking in August. The moratorium ends in July.

The effects of fracking, particularly those of chemicals injected into the ground in the Marcellus Shale, have come under increasing scrutiny.

The city council in Pittsburgh, PA, unanimously voted in November to prohibit fracking.

The ban came five months after a blowout in Clearfield of a Marcellus Shale well that spewed natural gas and wastewater into the air, prompting the Federal Aviation Administration to restrict air space around the site. The well, owned by Texas-based EOG Resources, had leaked in the weeks before the blowout.

Congress has ordered the Environmental Protection Agency to investigate after lawmakers discovered that companies used more than 30 million gallons of diesel fuel in 19 states for fracking in spite of an industry pledge in 2003 to stop the use of diesel fuel.

The EPA regulates the use of diesel fuel for drilling operations under the Safe Drinking Water Act, and companies that use diesel fuel must first receive a permit from the agency.

The EPA on Tuesday released a draft of how it will study the effects of fracking on drinking water. The agency plans to examine the lifespan of water used in drilling, from acquisition to mixing, management of flowback and disposal.

The draft will be open for public comment next month. Results are expected by the end of next year.

“Natural gas plays a key role in our nation’s clean energy future and the process known as hydraulic fracturing is one way of accessing that vital resource,” the EPA said.

Here’s the latest action we’re following today on the GreenBeat:

Nissan admits to Leaf delays – VentureBeat first reported on expected delays of the all-electric Nissan Leaf last year. Now the automaker has formally acknowledged Leaf delivery delays due to bottlenecks in the quality assurance and distribution process, the Financial Times reports. The company delivered 19 cars to customers in December and 87 last month, and expects delivery issues to ease by April for the 20,000 customers on the Leaf waiting list.

A123 nabs energy storage deal in Chile – The battery maker has won a deal worth 20 megawatts of its advanced energy storage solutions from AES Gener, one of the top electricity generators in Chile. A123’s batteries will be used to store reserve energy at one of AES Gener’s plants. The two companies also have a reserve capacity project in New York, slated for completion this year.

LS9 inks Procter & Gamble partnership — The biofuels company announced today its second partnership with consumer goods giant Procter and Gamble, which will focus on expanding on renewable chemicals made by LS9 for use in P&G products. The project expands on the renewable chemicals partnership announced between the two companies in 2009.

Wind offset Super Bowl energy use – Energy consumed at yesterday’s Super Bowl was offset by the purchase of wind credits in Texas, which is the top producer of wind energy in the country. A Texas grid official also highlighted wind power contributing to the state’s peak electricity generation in last week’s statewide rolling blackouts, which were mandated by officials to reduce strain on the grid after several power plants unexpectedly shut down in the cold weather.

Control4 raises $15 million — The home energy management module-maker has raised the cash out of a planned $25 million round. Control4 recently teamed with smart grid company Silver Spring Networks to roll out several home smart grid applications.

McPhy grabs hydrogen storage deal – The company has signed a deal to supply a solid hydrogen storage solution to Enel Group, Italy’s largest power company. The system can hold 2 kilograms of solid hydrogen, stored in the form of magnesium hydrides, and results in a reversible hydrogen storage system.
